Vision
Every person of African descent knows their family history.
Mission
The Center for Black Genealogy is an innovative educational, historical and cultural institution dedicated to using genealogy to positively impact communities around the globe. The Center will support cultural enrichment at all levels of education.
Why is the Center needed?
Genealogy cultivates personal pride, documents family histories and contributes to the world’s historical record. Genealogy promotes critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, and life-long learning.
The study of Black genealogy has been by trial and error since Alex Haley wrote Roots, over thirty years ago. The Center will institutionalize Black genealogy and enhance scholarship. Youth often feel disconnected until they learn their ancestors built America and realize they have an ownership stake in their country.
Programs
The Center will conduct and promote genealogical & historical research, conduct educational programs, promote excellence in genealogical & historical research, promote genealogy in schools, and preserve genealogical and historical records in America, Africa and wherever people of African descent live.
The Center services will include youth programs, workshops, conferences, classes, publishing, research, and online programs vital to the genealogical community.
Center’s facilities will consist of a library, archives, museum, classrooms, preservation lab and oral history studio.
What are the benefits?
Genealogy research has academic, social and economic benefits. Genealogy research teaches critical thinking and using primary documents to discern fact from myth. Results of genealogical research can add to and correct the historical record.
Genealogy can help transform the lives of Black youth, including those who are in at-risk populations. Genealogists often trace their ancestors to American heroes where they can be proud of their contributions, perhaps inspiring them to reach for greatness. Genealogy research often culminates in a love for history, a newfound pride in cultural heritage, and self-confidence. Genealogy can also develop citizenship and lead to life long learning.
The Center will develop new methodologies, programs, technologies, products and services to enhance the community and strengthen the growing field of Black Genealogy.
